Tourism et activities between Marseilles and Toulon, near Embiez Island and Castellet
Enjoy the gentle pleasures in life all year round in the charming town and authentic fishing port of Sanary-sur-mer, situated on the Mediterranean coast between Marseilles and Toulon,.
This section of coastline is part of the Var region and Sanary-sur-mer, sits opposite the Embiez archipelago, basking in surroundings of outstanding natural beauty. There are fantastic views towards the sea with sand and pebble beaches and rocky outcrops, while further inland, inviting pathways wind through the wild hills and garrigues, orchards, ancient olive groves and the famous vineyards of Bandol.
Visitors can stroll around Sanary through pedestrian streets, enjoy the shade of the many squares or walk along the quayside and watch the Pointus (traditional Mediterranean fishing vessels) bringing their freshly caught fish in to quay.
Throughout the year there are the lavender festival, the Street Arts Performances and a fish festival, as well as the programme of events at The Galli Theatre.
Things to do
There are whole range of activities in close vicinity of The Best Western Soleil & Jardin Hotel including golfing (the golf course is a 5 minutes away), ten-pin bowling, tennis, climbing, hiking, cycling and horse-riding, as well as big-game-fishing, sailing and deep-sea diving or simply swimming in the sea.
There are boat trips to the Embiez, Porquerolle and Bendor Islands, through the Calanques National Park from Cassis to Marseilles, and Toulon harbour. You can walk along the coastal pathway from the fishing port to golden beach of la Plage Dorée, or enjoy longer walks along the beaches in winter.
There is a flower market in front of the Town Hall and the fresh caught fish is sold every morning. The weekly market selling seafood and local produce takes place every Wednesday morning all year through along the quays and in the shade of the plane trees lining the Allées Estienne d'Orves.
Events and the Castellet Racing Track
The Festival PHOTOMED takes place every year at the end of May celebrating the outstanding natural beauty of the coastal region in some 500 photographs shown in 14 different local exhibitions in Sanary-sur-Mer, Bandol, Toulon and Bendor Island.
The exhibitions are free, one of the objectives of the festival is that it is open to everyone, whether professional or amateur photographer or just passing through.
Racing fans may enjoy a day out at the Castellet Racing track with racing lessons for pilotage Audis, GTs, BMWs and Porsches as well as motorbikes and go-karts and Formula 1 qualification races.
